The City of Los Angeles will add electric cars to its municipal fleet in order to help deal with its pollution and traffic problems. That includes adding battery-powered and plug-in hybrids in its green initiative. To increase the city's use of sustainable energy, the police, fire, water, and power departments will use the eco-friendly vehicles, while L.A. will also test Tesla Model S and BMW i3 vehicles.
Los Angeles' general services department will lease some of the 160 battery-powered e-cars. Meanwhile, it will get all of the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (EVs), according to Engadget.
Mayor Eric Garcetti wants the City of Angels to become the United States' most sustainable city. It now has the most battery-powered EVs in the country in its Sustainable City pLAn, according to Modern Readers.
The California city's plan is for half of its new small cars to be EVs by 2017. That includes converting its police squad cars from gas-powered to battery-powered.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has added a Tesla Model S to its EV fleet. The P85D can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere 3.2 seconds.
Besides its green cars that will hit the road, the city also now has a brand new Tesla Model S P85D and BMW i3 to use for testing and research. The former is equipped with a Ludicrous Mode.
The LAPD has already added 23 electric scooters to its fleet. It has also included three electric motorcycles.
Green vehicles are particularly important for Los Angeles due to its infamous traffic. The yearly TomTom traffic index has ranked it as having the worst rush hour and overall traffic in the U.S.
