On Dec. 12, 2013, Deputy Director of the HKSAR Environment Bureau, Lu Gonghui, met with Head of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Gina McCarthy, exchanging ideas on air quality management and discussing about further strengthening mutual cooperation on the environmental protection in Hong Kong and the U.S.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Environment Bureau and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed an agreement in 2011, expressing their commitment to expand cooperation in environmental protection. During the meeting on Dec. 12, 2013, both sides agreed to establish a regular exchange mechanism to master the latest research on air quality.

Seminars will also be co-hosted by the two sides to discuss about ship emissions and the new generation of air quality simulation and surveillance methods. The seminars aim to provide researchers and policy makers with platforms where information could be shared.

Lu Gonghui indicated that strengthening the cooperation between The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Environment Bureau and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be beneficial to research on air quality and establishment of relevant policies.

It was learned that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Environment Bureau and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will also make decisions on research topics for air quality simulation, surveillance and data analysis in order to provide scientific support to government's policymaking, thus ensuring air quality and public health.
