The fire reportedly happened at 4 a.m. on Dec. 29 and was put out at 6 a.m.  No injuries were reported, but the ancient stage collapsed during the fire.

In 2006, the Anhwei "Origin Stage" was deemed the sixth most important cultural site in all of China. The monetary damage caused by the fire is impossible to gauge as the Anhwei "Origin Stage" was a priceless artifact.  With its destruction, an important piece of Chinese history was also lost.

The "Origin Stage" was built in 1587 with three separate parts, two stages and one sleeping area. Altogether, it was more than 600 square meters in area, with ornamental carved beams. The main stage was 100 square meters, facing a courtyard of 200 square meters. Some films and television shows have been shot on location at the site.

Anhwei magistrate and Anhwei Qimen County have a total of 11 Ming dynasty era stages. The stages are magnificently ornate and seem to breathe ancient history into their present day surroundings. They are invaluable historical resources that provide a glimpse into ancient Chinese architecture, local culture and customs.

The Anhwei provincial and Huangshan City Fire Departments are currently at the site in Hangkou Village investigating the cause of the Dec. 29 fire.
