In what seems to be a concerted effort by the CCP to reach out to the public this year, another PR venture is underway in Nanjing.

On Jan.1,  400 people in groups of 8 showed up for the Nanjing government's "open house." The city's Secretary, Mayor and PR Director were on hand to greet the public, give them a small introduction to the building as well as wish them a happy new year.

At 9 a.m, the first group entered the building and were led by Nanjing PR Committee Member Zhang Shu Ding through various government buildings. Along the way, notable members of the CCP from Jiangsu Provincial Government and Nanjing City Government greeted patrons and gave an introduction to specific wings of the government.

"This is the first day we opened our doors to the public. They're going to introduce Nanjing's countryside, its cityscapes, course of development as well as its rich history," said Nanjing City Secretary Yang Wei Zi.  He said he hoped that more people would come and visit them in order to understand Nanjing and the government's work. Afterwards he left patrons with good wishes for the new year.

One patron, Ms. Jia told a reporter that the winter's cold has been so terrible that it has been hard to reach her hands out, but the cup of hot tea (from the government) has given her a warm feeling inside. It was also learned that each patron would be receiving small gifts, including a map and business cards as well as an invitation to visit once again.

Also on hand was "The one armed Ironman," Nanjing's own disabled athlete. After taking in the open house, he said he was surprised that the government officials were so modest and approachable and not nearly as aloof and standoffish as he had imagined. More open house events are planned for the future including an "Open Garden" event in June.
