A tall building in downtown Lanzhou city was on fire on the afternoon of Jan. 2, 2014.
Official authorities claimed that the fire accident took place in a eco-park themed restaurant in the building. The cause of the accident, the registration and legitimacy of the business is going to be retraced. The officials also said that they've set up to clean all illegal structures in the city in a limited amount of time.
The building on fire is the Taisheng Building located in downtown Lanzhou city, which is very close to the State building and a major shopping center. According to Lanzhou City Police Fire captain Qing Zhao, there are no casualties reported so far. The city fire department has rescued more than 260 people, 30 of which were trapped victims. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The scene was immediately filled with a huge crowd who, were holding their phones to take pictures of the incident. Lanzhou police department has implemented traffic control for fire trucks to pass through. The fire was put out around 4pm.
Some witnesses have told reporters that the fire started around 2pm at the top of the building. A lot of smoke soon started coming out of the building that people can see from far away. People then found out that the fire came from floor 31 and floor 32 which should be the eco-park themed restaurant that is currently under renovation.
According to Qing Zhao, Ganzu Fire Department received the phone call around 2:20 pm. The center right away sent out 19 fire trucks and 160 fire fighters who rushed to the scene. Deputy Secretary of Lanzhou Municipal Government told reporters that there are about 36 apartment units and 74 office units in the building. The accident didn't cause any secondary disasters.
The City Government has already set up an investigation team to thoroughly investigate the accident. The person or entity responsible for the accident will face serious liability charges.
