Tech giant Google announced on Oct. 1 that it has acquired Jibe Mobile. The acquisition is part of Google's plan of adopting the Rich Communications Services messaging standards.
According to Tech Crunch, Jibe Mobile will help bring Rich Communications Services standards into Google's Android products. Additionally, Google described Jibe Mobile as one of the leading provider of RCS services.
Financial details about the acquisition were not disclosed.
Android RCS Software Engineer and Minister of Messaging released a statement saying, "Rich Communications Services (RCS) is a new standard for carrier messaging and brings many of the features that people now expect from mobile messaging, such as group chats, high res photos and more."
Jibe Mobile said that no changes will be made on its operation only this time the company will be working under the Google banner. According to Venture Beat, the two tech companies will work together in order to develop and create an upgraded messaging platform for the Android operating system.
Tech analysts claim that RCS helps in making text messaging more like instant messaging. That type of messaging is currently available, however it consumes mobile data.
As of this writing, Jibe Mobile has raised $9.1 million in funding. The most recent funding drive was in December 2012 where the company raised $8.3 million. The last funding was meant for the development of rich communications like video chat, real-time games and other innovations on the mobile platform.
Jibe Mobile describes its operating as a "Cloud Communications Company for Mobile Operators, provides an open end-to-end technology platform for IP Communications."
