The 1980s classic TV series "MacGyver" will come alive as cable network CBS in the midst of putting together a brand new reboot.
The team behind the remake include executive producers R. Scott Gemmill of "NCIS:Los Angeles" and director James Wan of "Furious 7" and "Saw" fame. According to Entertainment Weekly, Henry Winkler, who produced the original series, will executive produce the remake with Wan and Gemmill, along with Michael Clear from CBS TV Studios.
According to the publication, the reboot will follow MacGyver in his early 20s as he is recruited into a clandestine organization where he hones his skills for getting out of tricky situations and averting disasters.
Film studio New Line announced a "Macgyver" feature film in 2009, however, the show never quite got off the mark. Earlier this year, Wan told Crave Online what he felt about a "MacGyver" film which he had hoped would take off, saying his initial concept was to portray a young MacGyver in College at one of Boston's top universities.
Wan said he wanted to base the storyline around a very intelligent MacGyver who gets blamed for creating a device which everyone wants, but falls into the wrong hands, gets weaponized with everyone targeting MacGyver's character to save the day. However, Wan gave up the project owing to commits to take on "Furious7."
The original "MacGyver" show ran between 1985 and 1992 on ABC for seven seasons, with Richard Dean Anderson in the lead role. While there were two TV movies based on the MacGyver character, in 2003 Warner Brothers had ordered a "Young MacGyver" pilot but then passed.
The popular 80s show follows a long list of old show remakes including "Full House", "The X-Files," "Heroes," "Prison Break" and "The Muppets."
