Balenciaga has been a homegrown for creative talent and they are adding a new mastermind, Demna Gvasalia.
As the new creative director of Balenciaga, Gvasalia will be Alexander Wang's replacement after Wang announced a few months ago that he will be leaving the fashion company, according to GQ.
"I am delighted to welcome Demna Gvasalia, a powerful emerging force in today's creative world," the magazine quoted François-Henri Pinault, Kering's chief executive and chairman, as saying. "Demna Gvasalia embodies a unique approach to the profession, marked by a sociological observation of the wardrobe's essentials and the way he remains humble and rigorous in his creative work."
Though his name has not reached mainstream media yet, Gvasalia is a huge icon in the fashion industry. He is a genius underground designer who has already reached the peak of the Paris audience with his design collective Vetements, according to Quartz. His brand is fairly new but it has already been dubbed as "the coolest brand in fashion."
Gvasalia's design is more on the cut and stich approach and he usually repackages vintage finds. One of his most iconic designs would be the oversized jackets that cost almost about $1,000 as well. Made from old denim, his designer jeans were reworked based on his desgins and they sell out although they cost over $1,000.
Gvasalia will continue to head the Vetements team while filling out the artistic director post for Balenciaga. He used to work as one of the design team members of Louis Vuitton from 2012 to 2014.
