Chinese film star and singer Zhou Xun, who CNN dubbed as China's "Queen of Quirks" in 2010, surprised fans with her recent return on small-screen as a star in the series adaptation of "Red Sorghum."
The actress will return as Jui Er, the lead female role in the TV series which is based on novelist Mo Yan's "Red Sorghum Clan."
Red Sorghum already had a film adaptation released in the 1980s where actress Gong Li played the main role.
Zhou, who played roles of elegant women in her previous acting stints, will depict a different character for "Red Sorghum." She will pull off portraying a poor girl during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Despite being in the industry for over a decade, some critics doubt her ability to present herself as Jui Er, a simple lady from Shandong.
Mo and Director Zheng Xiao, on the other hand, said in a report that despite critics' doubts, they are both confident Zhou would do well for "Red Sorghum."
The drama version to be aired on TV will faithfully follow more details from the novel, Zheng said.
Other actors playing for "Red Sorghum" are Zhu Yawen, Huang Xuan and Qin Hailu.
The show is expected to debut on Dragon TV, Zheijang TV, Shandong TV and Beijing TV on Oct. 27.
