Popcorn Time, the famous movie pirating site, has shut down forever after a week of going in and out of service. The site illegally streams films for free online.
Wally, Popcorn Time developer, said that he shutdown all the servers, there is nothing he can do anymore. He removed any logs that can be harmful for other dev. The developers of the site said that the shutdown was the result of outsiders.
The Popcorn Time Team said that in the past few days someone has been tempering with their infrastructure, primarily their DNS service, and they can't convince their provider Gandi.net that they want to remain online, Torrent Freak reported.
Rumors are also doing the rounds that some developers were leaving Popcorn Time over fear of legal consequences.
However, reports also suggest that the creators of the site are planning to launch a legal alternative known as Project Butter. Developers said that the new project will never stream copyrighted materials. Butter is Popcorn Time minus the links to pirated films and television shows.
Project Butter is created so that anybody can contribute to great mobile and desktop apps that allow to stream shows and films from Bittorrent in an easy way. Developers think that the new project will be able to deliver a good streaming service, according to The Verge.
Famous torrent site, YTS, aka YIFY, has also been down for days. Several Popcorn Time applications use YTS as the main torrent resource.
Popcorn Time was launched in 2014.
