To raise funds for a female student suffering from uremic syndrome, university students in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province in China, have started a campaign to help their fellow.
Wang Yuye, a PhD student currently studying at the Central China Normal University (CCNU), has to pay 300,000 yuan for treatment that her family could not afford. Wang has been in critical condition since start of November.
The fundraising campaign titled "Yuye, Stay with Us" will help earn money for 28-year-old Wang's hospitalization. In exchange of the donations, roses are given as a token to the contributors.
Students and teachers from other universities joined in the campaign taken to the Wuhan streets and gave personal donations as well.
Xu Gang, one of the student volunteers from CCNU, said that Wang is a talented person and the whole school community feels sorry for her condition--the reason why they are in aid.
With both Wang's parents working as farmers in Laizhou, Shandong Province--her mother, Liu Xiangyu, have both legs paralyzed--her family barely makes ends meet especially that she has two younger twin brothers still to be raised.
Liu said that Wang refused dialysis many times and kept her condition to herself. They only knew she has uremic syndrome after she was hospitalized.
On Nov. 1, Wang's heart and lungs were already affected by the disease and her condition worsened.
Now in her third year for her doctorate degree, Wang said that if only she could finish her studies and land a job, she could bring financial stability to her family and help support her parents.
Wang's doctor, Yu Wenli of the Central South Hospital, said that only 5 percent of the Wang's kidneys is working. However, it is not enough to sustain her health and there is a possibility of complications in the heart and lungs.
Yu said that Wang must undergo a kidney transplant very soon.
