With the experiment, the aluminum was burned right off the CD's plastic, "making it impossible to recover anything off the disk," notes Geek.com. The tech website acknowledges it is a mad scientist experiment and not the safest way to erase a disc contents.

In the era of so many sex scandals and revenge porn, the technology to erase CD contents is certainly appreciated by victims of these two scams. Another method to destroy content is to physically smash the CD into pieces. But that would assume that CD is the only copy.

There are actually rewritable CDs on the market. To erase data on a rewritable CD, if the computer is a MacBook, launch Disc Utility found in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the CD or DVD that would be erased in the left column. The click the "Erase" tab. The Mac checks the "Quick Erase" tab by default to prepare the CD for reuse. Using this tab takes less time. Finally, click the "Erase" button, according to Macobserver.

The tech website reminds that rewritable CDs have a limited life. The maximum to erase and reuse the CDs is about 100 times. The portal also discourages using rewritable disc for long-term file archiving.
