When Ronda Rousey made history by being the cover of Ring magazine for the January 2016 issue, a number of boxing fans were not happy because she is not a boxer, although the UFC fighter has expressed a desire to foray into the sport.
On Wednesday, one more voice added to the disappointment with Ring's choice of cover story, but because the dissenter had a history of word war with Ronda, Floyd Mayweather's opinion that her appearance on the publication's cover made boxing look bad could be held suspect.
His opposition has to do with Ronda's gender as well as her coming from another sport. "Well, you know, congratulations, but you know the sport is starting to look bad when a female fighter from a whole other sport is on the cover of a boxing book," FightHype quotes Mayweather.
His "sarcastic congratulations," though is a step higher from past comment when he said he did not even know who Ronda is, which sparked the word war.
Mayweather even sees beyond Ronda being the cover, saying that since Oscar de la Hoya - with whom Mayweather also had a falling out after a boxing promotions partnership - owns Ring magazine, his choice of Ronda as cover indicates he has no other boxer, except Canelo Alvarez.
"Basically, it's like he's trying to steal her from (UFC president) Dana White," Sportingnews quotes "Money May."
The January 2016 issue will be available in newsstands on Nov. 15, a day after Ronda is expected to win over former boxer Holly Holm in the UFC 193 main event in Melbourne, Australia.
