Online photo-sharing site Instagram recently announced that its number of monthly active users reached 300 million people, 70% of which are users outside the United States. The photo-based social media network now beats Twitter, with its 284 monthly active users announced six weeks ago.
Netizens were first skeptical about Facebook's inquisition of Instagram in 2012, but there are more than 70 million images being shared every day, with the total reaching more than 30 billion photos.
"Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community," said Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom.
In March 2014, Instagram users reached up to 200 million users, just a year and a month after it announced that it had 100 million users.
The photo-sharing service is just one of Facebook's widely used online social media services. Facebook itself has 1.35 billion active users, its Messenger has 500 million and its cross-platform instant messaging application WhatsApp has 600 million users.
Instagram is planning to launch a verified badge scheme to be given to brands, athletes and celebrities to inform followers whether the account is authentic. The scheme was first used by microblogging service Twitter and was followed by Facebook in May 2013.
In addition, instead of just deactivating fake and spammer accounts, Instagram will now be deleting them.
Instagram first launched in October 2013 for iPhone users, while its Android version was launched on April 3, 2012, which also marked Instagram's 30 million mark on its iPhone users.
