Singapore's MMA darling, "Unstoppable" Angela Lee (3-0) notched another impressive submission victory, this time over "The Kilapino" Natalie Gonzales Hills (2-3) of the Philippines in the very first round of a three round mixed martial arts bout at ONE: Pride of Lions last Friday, November 13 in Singapore.
Hills started the bout aggressively with her Muay Thai, smothering Lee with punches and kicks. It looked as if Hills was getting the better of Lee in the striking exchanges, and was giving Lee a hard time from the get-go.
Then, in a flash, Hills shot in for a takedown after Lee missed a kick.
"I saw the opportunity to go in for the ground and pound, I made a mistake," said Hills in a post-fight interview.
Lee weathered the storm but wound up with her back on the canvas with Hills on top.
Impressively, Lee turned things around with a reversal on Hills, and landed in full mount.
From there, Lee worked to take Hills' back and to the surprise of everyone in attendance, secured a very rare submission called a "Twister" to force Hills to tap out.
A Twister is a grappling submission when an opponent's body is torqued in different directions from the torso. It is an extension of the Rear-Naked Choke and Face Crank.
To date, only a handful of fighters have successfully landed the Twister in MMA competition -- one being the UFC's Chan Sung "Korean Zombie" Jung in 2011 and the other being Lee's Evolve-MMA stablemate, ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki in 2014.
Lee joins a very exclusive list.
Despite the loss, Lee's opponent Hills remains optimistic at another chance to prove her skill in ONE Championship.
"My dream has been to fight in the Philippines," says Hills.
With the victory, Angela Lee improves her professional MMA record to three wins and is undefeated, with all three of her wins coming by submission.
Her ground game is truly legit and the world is starting to take notice. At current, there aren't enough female strawweights in ONE Championship to give Lee a fight, so she may have to move up in weight to look for more experience.
At bantamweight, fighters like Ann Osman of Malaysia and former boxing world champion Ana Julaton campaign.
Regardless, Lee looks to be 'unstoppable' and is on a definite roll as of late.
