During the meeting, which was held while the president was on an inspection tour in Jiangsu Province, Xi said that military officials should learn lessons from the corruption charges pressed against former Central Military Commission vice chairman Xu Caihou.

Xu was removed from the Communist Party of China in June following an investigation on his alleged abuse of power and acceptance of money in exchange for ranks among military officials.

Xi, who also serves as chairman of the Central Military Commission and general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that all armed forces officials should treat the case of Xu and that of Gu Junshan, former deputy chief of the general logistics department of the People's Liberation Army, as a warning against corrupt practices.

"Our military should guarantee unity and loyalty to the Party and the Military Commission of the Central Committee of the CPC," the president said.

Zhu Lijia of the Chinese Academy of Governance said that Xi's remarks are an indication of the heightened campaign against corruption in the military.

"The Xu and the Gu cases show that correcting attitudes and standardizing behavior are urgently needed in the military," Zhu said.
