"The View" hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O'Donnell got into a screaming match during the episode of the ABC morning show on Dec. 18, Thursday. What got them into the heated argument was the "Hot Topics" segment when they discussed racism in America.
Goldberg said it is fine that O'Donnell is a white lady telling her what is racist to her. When O'Donnell replied saying she is a "gay-American that has been called a dyke," Goldberg argued it is a different thing.
O'Donnell added that she is raising an African-American child and emphasized she does have "a black kid" in her house but Goldberg still went on to say it is not the same.
For O'Donnell, a person does not have to "be black to know what racism is," which Goldberg did not agree to,
Specifically, "The View" hosts discussed Michelle Obama's revelation to People magazine that she and the President of the United States have been mistaken as the hired helpers. For Goldberg, there were no implications of racism in the First Lady's statement.
O'Donnell pointed that racism does exist and it is "a fact of American history and life today, and so we have to face it," which Goldberg said was not "outright racism" but "might be ignorance."
Goldberg and O'Donnell's "The View" co-hosts Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace also gave their own views about racism.
Perez asked, "You don't think it's racist if someone turns to the leader of the free country and says, 'Can you park my car?'"
For Wallace, not every American is racist. The conservative host supported her point by pointing out that the United States elected an African-American president twice.
Before the screaming match, Goldberg told her four other co-hosts, including guest co-host "Orange Is A New Black" star Laverne Cox that they "need to know what real racism is."
