Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk announced on Twitter that the Tesla Roadster will be given an upgrade before 2014 ends.
According to Musk's tweet, the Roadster upgrade will give it the ability for "non-stop travel" between Los Angeles and San Francisco, which is about 400 miles apart. He ended the tweet with a greeting for Christmas.
The current range of the Roadster is around 240 miles only. If the Roadster upgrade is pushed through, it will surpass the range of its
According to Jalopnik.com, the Roadster upgrade may involve the model's controller and battery. It said that a full replacement for the battery and a software upgrade may be possible.
After the initial tweet, Musk followed up again by saying that there will be no "battery pack upgrade" for the Model S, but emphasized that it "will happen long-term."
The Tesla Roadster is the Palo Alto firm's first released vehicle in 2008. It was followed by the Model S in 2012.
Musk and his firm are giving the Roadster upgrade as a reward for over 2,000 early adopters of its first production vehicle before electric cars were widely popular.
The Roadster upgrade was first promised on June, but was pushed back due to "several crisis issues" that Musk attended to, including the explosion of a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX in August.
Before the Roadster upgrade, Tesla Motors started testing earlier this December its battery swapping technology for select Model S drivers. The technology allows drivers to just swap their battery instead of supercharging it. Swapping batteries will only take less than 7 minutes, while charging them would take around 30 minutes.
