"Gravity Falls" is not coming back after season 2. The show may not have a third season but the creator revealed that it was their own decision and not Disney's.
On his Tumblr page, showrunner Alex Hirsch admitted that there will be no season 3 for the series. He shared that there are only two episodes left "Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality" and "Weirdmageddon III," which will be both one-hour long episodes serving as the series finale.
Hirsch explained that it has always been his vision to create a finite series about one epic summer. He insisted that the show is not being "cancelled but it's being finished." He added that long before they aired season 2, he, along with the other writers, have decided that it will be their last.
"I wanted to announce this to the world at large then, but I was restricted from doing so, mainly because I think a lot of people were hoping I'd change my mind," Hirsch shared.
When asked about the probability that he will eventually change his mind, Hirsch said that he has decided to let go. He, however, hinted that the story of Dipper, Mabel & Stan does not end here. He said that the chapter is closed but although the network has no plans of running a full season it might just eventually happen. Who knows.
According to Wired, the arduous production cycle and the creator wearing multiple hats behind the scenes may have contributed on the show's early demise. The outlet held that there is also another theory on Reddit, in which Hirsch thought to cut the series short after obsessed fans kept reading too much into the episodes. It was said that they were just giving too much away about the show's ultimate twist.
