Tech giant Apple is pulling the plug off its social analytics platform called Topsy Labs. The reason for the shutdown is still unclear and accessing Topsy's website will redirect users to a support page from Apple. Topsy is a Twitter analytics service that is hailed by many tech experts as the best way to search for a Twitter entry.
Following the shutdown, Topsy posted a tweet that reads, "We've searched our last tweet." The service's official profile bio also reads, "Every tweet ever published. Previously at your fingertips."
Apple acquired Topsy in 2013 for a reported sum of more than $225 million, according to The Verge. During that time, it ranks as one of the costliest acquisition made by the Cupertino-based company. Following Apple's acquisition of Topsy, many tech experts believe that Apple and Twitter are working on a project.
It is important to note that Topsy is one of the only three authorized resellers of data from Twitter. Topsy also has an advanced search function that allow its user to search for all posted tweets, a function that has been demanded by Twitter users for quite some time.
Tech experts are still not sure what Apple is planning to do with Topsy's proprietary software and workforce. There are some experts that suggest Apple might have integrated Topsy's analytical technology into iOS 9's Search function.
Apple's decision to shut down Topsy is not entirely a shocking news. In 2014, Topsy stopped premium users to renew their subscription, according to Fortune. A move which led many analysts to believe that the service will soon close its doors as well.
