Popular BitTorrent client uTorrent has recently implemented a major overhaul that promises better stability and performance of its application, which arguably is the preferred software of millions of torrent users frequenting sites such as The Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents. The torrent app has also cut down on NSFW ads, a new report said.
Thanks to the series of software updates deployed by the uTorrent team this 2015, the torrent client has become leaner and cleaner, TorrentFreak reported. While the app interface was not noticeably revised, the size was significantly shaved off and the security was further boosted.
"µTorrent got smaller and more efficient. µTorrent developers were on the front lines of addressing security vulnerabilities identified for the wider libutp-based community," the report quoted the uTorrent team as saying in a statement.
App stability was also given top priority this year, leaving the torrent client not only smaller from the past builds but also more reliable.
"We improved stability and performance with a series of changes that further reduced crash rates. We fixed bugs when they appeared and tweaked the small features you asked us to address," the uTorrent team reported.
The uTorrent team boasted too that incidences of app crashes have been reduced by as much as 50% this 2015, leaving users of the app more loyal and happier than ever. TorrentFreak has estimated that uTorrent counts 150 million active users per month, both in the desktop and mobile platform.
But what could prove as the most notable change applied by the uTorrent team is the decision to ditch the sexy ads that support the torrent client's global operation. Per TorrentFreak, "uTorrent has decided to ban Russian brides and other NSFW banners."
"We've raised our ad standards for our advertisers to deliver higher-quality safe-for-work ads," the team declared.
And in order to offset the impact of lost revenues for shying away from these sexy ads, the uTorrent team is mulling alternative ways to monetize on its operation while building up a cleaner image. One option is crowdfunding part of the operation as the uTorrent team told TorrentFreak that users can expect "some baby steps and some bolder steps," to come in 2016.
