Accessories designer Alessandro Michele, 42, has been appointed as the next creative director of Gucci, succeeding Frida Giannini as the head of the fashion brand told Bloomberg.
Sources told the publication that Gucci chief executive officer and Kering SA owner Francois-Henri Pinault approved the appointment, and he attended the Gucci men’s fashion show on Jan. 20, Tuesday, in Milan, which was headed by Michele.
Pinault has entrusted a less famous designer to lead a major role in the fashion industry and to handle such luxury portfolio. Gucci’s sales have barely increased at $4 billion brand in a span of 12 months in lieu to the downhill industry sales.
Michele shared his flavorful vision for Gucci when Giannini left the post earlier than expected. The new creative head lead his team of designers to create a men’s wear collection inspired by silk for blouses, capes, and berets. The runway was filled with the music from the movie “A Single Man,” which was directed by Tom Ford who is known for making Gucci sexy.
Michele used to work side by side Gianini in 2011, when he took over the leather products, jewelries, accessories, shoes, and homeware. He became the creative director of porcelain manufacturer Richard Ginori 1735 SpA which was bought by Gucci in 2013, according to Fashionista.
Giannini was Gucci’s hand bag designer before she got promoted as creative director of the brand known for its best quality and sophisticated designer leather bags.
It was said that Gucci just decided to promote someone within their home yard so Michele got the post which was hoped for by bigger names like Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane and Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci.
