According to the latest NBA rumors, San Antonio Spurs wants Kevin Durant in the offseason.
As Durant's free agency is closing-in, and with Duncan's possible exit by the end of this season, the team would need a legit stabilizer to fill the loss, Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports reported.
The Spurs clearly has a tempting offer, with the incredible development of Kawhi Leonard, the acquisition of a highly versatile center LaMarcus Aldridge, and with Gregg Popovich's superb coaching style, it is quite possible that this 5-time NBA champions can persuade OKC's MVP to join the team.
The seven-time NBA all-star received numerous awards from the league because of his overwhelming talent in playing the sport. However, his road for the championship ring is too slippery even with the help of Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka.
This is an opportunity for a powerhouse team such as San Antonio Spurs to come close and set a deal with Durant. If the management can pull off the Durant project, the Spurs has a better chance in continuing its legacy, but it better beat the offer of Golden State Warriors who did, according to rumors, expressed their desires to acquire the 6-foot-9-inches small forward.
There are also reports linking that Durant's fans are chanting for him to join Boston Celtics. When Durant praised Boston, it started the speculation that the four-time scoring champion is considering to sign with Celtics. Due to this, Celtics' fans chanted "Come to Boston"; however, Durant responded "No thoughts really."
It is expected that Durant's value would dramatically increase by the time he enters his free agency. Interestingly, the spurs can still adjust with Durant's salary cap through Tim Duncan's possible departure that would give the team a leverage monetarily, and could be enough to cover the financial requirement of the deal.
Manu Ginobili is also one of the Spurs' key players that may retire this season.
