With the upcoming release of Nintendo NX, the company is also said to end the production of Wii U in 2018 due to decline of sales.
It was just recently when news broke out that Nintendo is planning to end the development of Wii U at the end of this year. The news was reported by Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper. However, according to the recent statement released by Nintendo, the video game company contradicts the initial report and said that it is not ending Wii U in 2016, but speculations insist that Nintendo's rumored NX system might be an indication that the Wii U will eventually face its end, Geek reported.
According to Gamespot, Nintendo's CEO Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that the Japanese video game company is considering to stop producing Wii U by 2018. Kimishima provided the statement during Nintendo's meeting, relating to its earnings.
The same publication exposed that Wii U underperformed in terms of enticing the gamers to buy the product. The report revealed that the said device only sold 12.8 million units globally, which is significantly low compared to the sales record of the Wii console that has been reported to reach more than 100 million.
Another indication that Nintendo might end Wii U's production 2 years from now is because, it has been reported to be outsold by its competitor, the PlayStation 4 that reportedly sold roughly 36 million units. Its other competitor, Microsoft's Xbox One is also rumored to have sold 18 million units, which is certainly better than the numbers of Wii U since the device was made available to the market in November 2012.
The reports also claim that Nintendo is not expecting for a high sales umber with Wii U in 2017, knowing that the video game company will release its NX console. This is why gamers might opt to buy NX rather than Wii U. Speculations also suggest that the Japanese video game company is only expecting about 800,000 units of Wii U to be sold next year.
Nevertheless, the rest of the financial report relating to Nintendo's earnings with Wii U are still not out or translated to English. With that said, gamers may expect that in the coming days or a few weeks, more updates about Nintendo's plans with Wii U might surface.
