AMD might have finally confirmed the existence of the Sony PlayStation NEO or the PlayStation 4.5 as they could be developing a 14nm CPU for the upcoming console.

During their recent 2016 Investor Day, AMD has revealed their plans and roadmap for their current and future products for the following months and years. While there have been no explicit announcements regarding the PlayStation NEO, one phrase in particular stood out from the rest of their plans.

In one of their slides, the company claimed that they have a "new semi-custom business in 2H 2016." There were no more details given regarding that plan but the initial speculation was that it would be for the upcoming Nintendo NX console.

However, there is a lack of evidence that can point AMD with the new console from the Japanese video game company. AMD's said business could be involved with the Sony PlayStation NEO or the PlayStation 4.5, according to VR World.

AMD's Polaris for the PlayStation 4K could be clocked at 911 MHz which would confirm the upgrade from the PS4 which has a clock frequency of 800 MHz. Number of core units could also be increased up to 2500 inside the Polaris 10 GPU.

In order for the new console from Sony to be able to run titles at 4K and with 60 frames per second, it would probably need a powerful GPU and CPU, or APU if they are to be put together. The new chip would most likely deliver the needed performance upgrade over the last gen of consoles.

There are also speculations that the Microsoft Xbox Two, or Xbox NeXt, and the Nintendo NX would be more powerful than Sony's PlayStation NEO. There are no concrete proofs yet but all the signs are pointing to the same conclusion.

Sony reportedly asked AMD to use the new 14nm FinFET Polaris GPU architecture for their PlayStation 4.5, according to TechFrag. The current gen of consoles still uses 28nm planar transistors.

In addition, the speculations also point that the PlayStation NEO would be introduced at the Tokyo Game Show on September along with the Nintendo NX. It would also support the claims that the PlayStation 4.5 or 4K would be supporting the PlayStation VR headset too besides the PS4.
