Matthew Dellavedova is officially a Milwaukee Buck following the decision of Cleveland Cavaliers not to match the offer sheet worth $38.5 million. The sign and trade deal saw the Cavs receiving a $4.8 million trade exception, cash as well as the rights to Albert Miralles.
Before the Dellavedova sign-and-trade deal, it was already a foregone conclusion that the Cavaliers would not match the offer sheet according to Cleveland.com. The 25-year-old guard’s contract did not include a player or team option.
For the Bucks, they get a veteran guard who has proven his ability. Dellavedova was best known for his efforts during the 2015 NBA Finals as he filled in for a then injured Kyrie Irving.
Last season, Dellavedova put up career averages of 7.5 points, 4.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds according to ESPN. There is no word yet on whether the Australian cager will be starting for Jason Kidd next season.
On the other end, it will be interesting what the Cavaliers will do with Miralles. The 34-year-old forward was originally drafted by the Toronto Raptors back in 2004 and has never officially played an NBA game. To date, Miralles has been involved in four trades.
The Bucks are expected to maximize Matthew Dellavedova starting next season. He has been through two NBA Finals appearances and is officially an NBA champion. He is a well-rounded player who can contribute on both ends of the court.
On the offensive end, he has proven his arsenal which covers both inside and outside. As far as defense is considered, everyone knows his hard-nosed defense. He put that in display during the 2014-15 NBA Finals against Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.
The only difference with his stint with the Bucks and the Cavs is that he is expected to play more. He is likely to end up as one of the leaders in Milwaukee, a new challenge that should be interesting to see.
The Cavs on the other end will need to shop for a new backup guard with Dellavedova’s departure. So far, the 2016 NBA champions have re-signed Richard Jefferson and acquired Mike Dunleavy from the Chicago Bulls.
