(L-R) Karla Martinez, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig is on the set of Univisions 'Despierta America' to support the film 'Ghostbusters' at Univision Studios on July 11, 2016 in Miami, Florida.

The "Ghostbusters" 2016 remake is getting a sequel. Sources revealed that Sony hinted that a sequel will "no doubt" push forward.

Although initially receiving flop reviews, the "Ghostbusters" 2016 remake received good reviews on its opening day. It beat the odds and baffled many analysts who weren't sure as to where the negative social media hullaballoo prior to the movie's release came from. With that said, Sony Pictures' president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer is determined to keep the story going.

"The 'Ghostbusters' world is alive and well," Bruer told The Wrap. "I expect 'Ghostbusters' to become an important brand and franchise."  He added that "there's no doubt" in his mind that a "Ghostbuster" sequel will be put into work.

The post-credits scene in the "Ghostbusters" 2016 film may also be a hint as to who the villain in the second movie will be. The scene shows the female Ghostbusters quartet hanging out in their laboratory when Patty (Leslie Jones) fires up a machine that can apparently hear ghosts. Patty then hears an eerie voice asking, "What is Zuul?"

Zuul was the baddie in the original 1984 "Ghostbuster" film. According to The Independent, Zuul is the Gatekeeper of Gozer. This evil entity first appeared in Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) fridge and later possessed her.

As to what that post-credits scene means for the "Ghostbuster" franchise, director Paul Feig said it's the movie's way of saying that there's something fans know from the previous movies that may appear in the remake.

"But it's not about creating the cinematic universe where suddenly there's a worm-hole and the original Ghostbusters show up, although somebody might do that at some point," Feig said. "It was kind of a little comfort food, Easter egg, that gives us an opening if we wanted to do another movie."

"Ghostbusters" 2016 remake stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth. It scored an estimated $46 million in its first weekend in domestic theatres, landing second to "The Secret Life of Pets." The reboot is poised to overtake the original 1984 "Ghostbusters" as the highest grossing horror comedy of all time.
