"Arrow" season 5 will continue to focus mostly on lead character Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) in the first nine episodes.

In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Wendy Mericle acknowledged the fact that there are a handful of new characters that will be introduced in the upcoming episodes.

However, the stressed that Oliver will remain the core of the hit The CW series.

"The one thing that anchors and pulls everything through is Oliver. He's very much the focus of the first nine episodes," she said.

Meanwhile, other than tending to the needs of his family, friends and the residents of Star City, Oliver will also be preoccupied with being the mayor.

According to the exec, the lead character is taking on his new role very seriously even though he's not necessarily the best at it.

With this, Oliver's younger sister Thea (Willa Holland) steps in to help her brother with the tasks on hand.

"She, like Oliver, is trying to figure out her legacy through City Hall," she explained.

In other news, Katie Cassidy recently confirmed to Comic Book that her character Laurel Lance will be part of the season 5 premiere.

"And coming up, you will see me in the premiere of 'Arrow' season 5. Pretty exciting. And I will also be - they announced at Comic Con, which I'm safe to say - across all three shows: 'Flash,' 'Legends,' and 'Arrow,' for this next year. So, I'm excited about that," she said.

Laurel was killed off in the latter part of "Arrow" season 4 by the villainous character Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough).

Cassidy also shared that just a few weeks after her character died on TV, she received a call from the producers asking her to attend a meeting.

"I just had this gut feeling. You know, it's television and in this world, especially, anything can happen. And I think that's a positive thing, if you think about it. Because maybe, you know, bring them back. I don't know. So, yeah, definitely tough, but I appreciate the last four and a half years that they wrote for me," she said.

"Arrow" season 5 will premiere on The CW on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. ET.
