Given the massive expanse of the Marvel Universe, it's difficult to pick one superhero that will lord over everyone else. While Superman is undoubtedly the strongest character in DC Extended Universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to debut their most powerful contender.

According to Marvel Studio's head Kevin Feige, Captain Marvel leads the pack in terms of most powerful characters in the MCU. Speaking to IGN, Feige reveals that Captain Marvel is "by far the most powerful character we've ever introduced in the movie."

"She has -- as you know from the comics -- an interesting story, and I think we have a very cool and unique way of telling that story," Feige stated. "She will prove to be a very important character in our universe for all the movies."

Feige also says that Captain Marvel's origin story has been tweaked so that it doesn't appear similar to the Green Lantern's origin story. While the movie will be a bit different than the comics, the on-screen version of Carol Danvers will have more powers and a bigger role in the universe.

"We have to be aware of what's happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that's going on at the same time," writer Nicole Perlman said about the change, Time reported.

In the comic books, Carol Danvers obtains her powers after being exposed to an explosion from a machine created by the alien race Kree. During the event, a Kree hero named Captain Marvel transfers her powers to Carol, after which she takes on the mantle and becomes a superhero herself. It is similar to the Green Lantern's origin story, who got his powers from the ring of a dying alien.

Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson has been confirmed to portray Captain Marvel in the movies. Hers is the first female-led superhero film from Marvel. Feige states it is important to have a female director for the movie.

"Captain Marvel" is expected to hit theaters in 2019. She's also rumored to join the rest of the Marvel gang in "Avengers: Infinity War."
