After the confirmation that "Fantastic Beasts 2" would happen, writer J. K. Rowling finally offered some new details in the sequel film. The second installment of the "Harry Potter" spin-off series will explore Albus Dumbledore's sexuality.
Recently, Rowling has hinted that Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald romantic relationship will be touched upon in "Fantastic Beasts 2." It is said that the Hogwarts headmaster was once infatuated with the dark wizard.
"Well, I'm very comfortable with the question," Rowling told Screen Crush at the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's" premiere. "I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story, there're lots to unpack in that relationship."
Rowling added fans can expect to see Dumbledore as a young and quite a troubled man, stating that he was not always the sage. She went on to hint that the "Grand Sorcerer" will be openly gay in the series.
"We'll see him in that formative period of his life," she added. "As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch this space."
It can be recalled Rowling first revealed Dumbledore was gay during a special event at New York City's Carnegie Hall in 2007. There, the writer revealed she always thought Dumbledore to be gay. However, he no longer believed his own judgment in such matters after reflecting that falling in love with Grindelwald had driven him to lose his ethical compass. Thus, he turned out to be quite asexual and lead a chaste and bookish life.
It has yet to be determined who will play Professor Dumbledore in "Fantastic Beasts 2," but actor Johnny Depp was confirmed to play Gellert Grindelwald. The latter will make a brief appearance in the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" before starring in the sequel.
"Johnny Depp is a real artist," director David Yates told The Leaky Cauldron when asked why they picked Depp to fill such a pivotal role. "He's created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He's a really brilliant, brilliant actor."
"Fantastic Beasts 2" is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 16, 2018, with the third installment following on Nov. 20, 2020.
