HBO's "Westworld" has left fans speechless after Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) appeared completely nude in the Oct. 9 episode. For the English actress, going topless did not actually bother her, stating she is comfortable when she has to bare it all on-screen.
"Westworld" episode 2, which aired on Oct. 9, showed Maeve awakening amid surgery, while backstage at the luxury theme park. Fully nude, she then meandered the modern and clinical facility and saw her fellow hosts are disinfected like waste products after being killed.
Speaking about the role in "CBS This Morning," Newton said her role sometimes calls for nudity. She added that she felt more empowered while naked than wearing her character's signature sexualized outfit.
"All of these clothes were there to invite a lustful feeling from the viewer, from the person coming into the park," Newton added. "And I really, really found that invitation incredibly disempowering."
While the possibility of robots coming to consciousness may sound peculiar, the mother of three stressed it actually reflects human conduct and that the HBO show asks real questions about humanity. While the series is a fantasy, the actress does not think Westworld is an incomprehensible place.
"It's a place where you go and it's populated by machines that are there for your bidding and you can do whatever you want and whatever happens in Westworld stays in Westworld," she said. "So it's a place where we really get to understand the appetite of people's vices."
It comes after "Westworld" came under fire for airing a four-minute orgy, which viewers described as disturbing and awkward. The scene in question showed Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Willian (Jimmy Simpson) traveling to the town of Pariah, where they stumbled upon a decadent orgy.
Not long after the said episode aired, many viewers took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the steamy scenes. Even Dan Gainor, Vice President of Business and Culture at the Media Research Centre in the United States, denoted the showrunners' decision to highlight such nudity as disturbing.
"HBO is a network that broadcasts Sesame Street re-runs," Gainor said in a statement obtained by The Express. "And yes, parents should turn it off, stop paying for it and block it. 'Westworld' is a disturbing reminder of the sick and demented way Hollywood views the world."
