The Nintendo Switch is still a mystery as Nintendo continues to hold information back until January 2017. Despite this, new rumors have emerged indicating the Switch will be adding GameCube to its Virtual Console.

According to Eurogamer, unnamed sources from Nintendo claim not only is the Switch going to play GameCube games but several games have been listed. The list includes "Super Mario Sunshine," "Luigi's Mansion" and "Super Smash Bros. Melee." "Animal Crossing" is reportedly being tested.

The inclusion of a GameCube Virtual Console is unique given that the Switch will not play both Wii and Wii U games, like due to the lack of motion controls and the Wii U's touchscreen gamepad. The Wii U was not capable of emulating the GameCube but the original Wii was backwards compatible with the GameCube.

As of the time of writing, the Wii U is only capable of emulating games from the NES up to the N64. No GameCube Virtual Console will release for the Wii U given that production has been halted and the Switch will launch next year.

Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny these rumors but more details regarding the Switch will be unveiled during a Nintendo Direct event on Jan. 13, 2017. This event is expected to reveal the full capabilities of the Switch, including a possible GameCube Virtual Console.

A benchmark test of the Switch's processor did prove it can smoothly emulate GameCube games, Games Radar reported. This does not directly mean all GameCube games will natively run well on the Switch.

Other GameCube games that are expected to be added to the Virtual Console library include "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" and "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker." Both received HD remakes on the Wii U but the Switch will not natively play Wii U games. Should these games be released on the Switch it will be their GameCube originals.
