Dwayne Johnson and Zac Effron as seen in the 'Baywatch' trailer

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the "Baywatch" movie, based on the popular television series in the 1990s. The film will star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Mitch Buchannon and Zac Effron as Matt Brody, characters originally played by David Hasselhoff and David Charvet respectively.

Mitch is shown trying his best to keep the Baywatch brand of lifeguards relevant, stating throughout the trailer that they are the only ones who can save lives out in the open waters. During this sequence, he is shown saving a woman from a burning yacht.

It is stated that the budget for the Baywatch group had been cut down. A fresh new recruit, Matt Brody, is then brought in to save the brand. Brody is stated to have two Olympic medals and will be both a lifeguard and a PR icon to help keep the Baywatch group sustained but Mitch does not really like him.

While Mitch and Matt's partnership will be a key focus of the film they will also have to deal with a criminal plot that is taking place in the Bay. The trailer shows several sequences of Mitch and Matt escaping explosions and getting into gunfights with what appears to be the mob.

The film is straying from the original formula of the television series and is aiming for a Rated-R blend of comedy similar to the "21 Jump Street" films, Collider reported. There will be elements from the original series but it is stated to be an independent take on the franchise.

As per TV Line, the reboot film will have cameo appearances from original stars of the show including David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. Unfortunately, they are not seen in the trailer. Anderson's character, C.J. Parker, will now be played by Kelly Rohrbach.

"Baywatch" also stars Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Ilfenesh Hadera and Joe Bass. The film is scheduled to release on May 26, 2017.
