The box office success of both "Pacific Rim" and "Godzilla" that were released in 2013 and 2014 respectively has made fans of both franchises craving for more in which production outfit Legendary Pictures took notice of. That being said, reports are now suggesting that the company announced that the aforementioned featurettes now have monikers for their respective sequels.
MovieWeb noted that the supposed follow-up to "Pacific Rim" entitled "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" was replaced with an "Uprising" suffix. , part 2 for 2014's "Godzilla" now has a working title dubbed "Godzilla: King of Monsters."
It was also reported that Legendary tapped "Star Wars Episode 7" star John Boyega to star in the former as Stacker Pentecost's (Idris Elba) son. However, Charlie Hunnam who played as the main protagonist, Raleigh Beckett in the first film will not be part of the film's next installment due to ongoing commitments though he expressed his excitement about the sequel.
"Godzilla: King of Monsters," on the other hand, is said to feature the radioactive reptile facing several of its long-time nemeses such as the three-headed dragon King Ghidorah, the pteranodon rai kaiju Rodan, and even the behemoth insect known as Mothra. However, the latter may seem to be unlikely since Mothra is depicted as one of the hero monsters that comes to Godzilla's aid.
That being said, Collider mentioned that the next "Godzilla" film will be some sort of prelude to another monster-laden film in 2020 as it will be facing his western counterpart - the gigantic primate King Kong.
"Pacific Rim: Uprising" is slated to be rolled out on Feb. 23, 2018, with Steven DeKnight behind the camera, while "Godzilla: King of Monsters" will be handled by Michael Doherty and will be released on March 22 the following year.
