“The Man from Macau” actor Zhang Jin is among the several Chinese actors cast in Legendary Entertainment’s futuristic film “Pacific Rim 2.” Ironically, Chinese filmgoers would not be able to watch the movie when it premieres globally on Feb. 23, 2018.
According to Variety, China is excluded from the world premiere of “Pacific Rim 2” which stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny. Based on a world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham, the Steven DeKnight-directed movie would be released by Universal Pictures.
Comicbok reports that “Pacific Rim 2” just began filming in Cronulla in Queensland, Australia in October. Photos released by DeKnight showed John Boyega wearing gear that is post-apocalyptic in appearance such as worn jeans, black boots and layered jackets.
It is a sequel to “Pacific Rim” which was set in the near future with Earth at war versus monsters from an interdimensional portal found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. “Pacific Rim 2” would have John Boyega as the son of the character played by Idris Elba who sacrificed his life in “Pacific Rim.”
Besides Zhang Jin, whose film credits include “Kill Zone 2,” “SPL 2,” “Ip Man 3” and “The Grandmaster,” other Chinese actors in “Pacific Rim 2” include Wesley Wong, Chen Zitong, Qian Yong Chen, Lily Ji, Lan Yingying and a cameo appearance by Xiao Yang.
Dr. Jack Gao, an executive of Beijing Wanda Cultural Industry Group – the owner of Legendary Entertainment – said the movie company is excited to have amazing Chinese talent join “Pacific Rim 2” because it has a new story with strong connection to China. “This great Chinese cast will help us bring it to life,” Gao said.
The executive producers of “Pacific Rim 2” are Cale Boyter and Eric McLeod. Also involved in the production of the movie is the Upper Room Productions made up of Boyega, Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and del Toro.
