"Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" proved to be a major success for Wit Studio, the same production studio behind the massively popular "Shingeki no Kyojin" aka "Attack on Titan" series. During a recent Fuji TV Live Stream it was announced that a follow-up will be released sometime in 2018.

Very few details have been stated about the new series. It is uncertain if it will be a continuation of sorts to this year's show or if it will focus on a brand new set of characters or time period. According to Anime News Network, the only detail that has been confirmed is that it will be an animated series instead of live action.

For the rest of this year Wit Studio stated there will be two compilation films retelling the events of the first animated series. There will also be a Drama CD that tells the story of events taking place after this year's television series, Crunchy Roll revealed.

"Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress" takes place in a world where zombie-like beings known as "Kabane" have emerged. A single bite is all it takes to turn into one of them and they can only be killed by piercing the heart through a strong iron plate. Because of the difficulty in killing them they have spread quickly around the world.

Humans living on an island known as Hinomoto have barricaded themselves in fortresses and the only means of travelling from one fortress to the other is by steam locomotives called the "Hayajiro." The animated series revolves around the Kabane attacks on these pockets of civilizations.

Wit Studio has also released a promotional teaser to accompany all these announcements. It does not feature any new footage and only uses clips from the original series that aired earlier this year. The promotional video also does not further indicate if the 2018 series is a new story or a continuation.
