'Winds of Winter' writer George R. R. Martin and Joe Lansdale pose before SundanceTV's 'Hap & Leonard' Screening at the Jean Cocteau Theater on February 23, 2016 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Sansa Stark may become the Queen of the North in "Winds of Winter." The much-anticipated book is expected to release in January 2017.

Stark has had a very volatile journey in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" so far in which she has not gotten her due at all. "Winds of Winter" may change all that and make her a force to be reckoned with.

The eldest daughter of Eddard and Lady Catelyn Stark may inherit the property in the North as the rightful heir Robb Stark may be killed. Being the second in the succession line implies that she may become the Queen of the North and rule over a pivotal region.

In all the previous books of the "A Song of Ice and Fire," Stark is always at the helm of things but they have never worked out to her advantage. Hence, she is tired of just being a passerby and becoming a pawn for those in power. It is high time that she took control of her own life and made her own destiny.

Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow are expected to play an important part in Stark's journey to the throne. Stark may also marry Lannister and then rule ruthlessly over her subjects.

Meanwhile, the much-delayed book "Winds of Winter" may finally be released soon. Rumors abound that it is currently being proof-read and will be available in book stores in the near future.

Author George R. R. Martin is unhappy that the book is taking so long to release. In a Question and Answer session at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the author said that, "Winds of Winter" will be dark and grisly, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Martin also added that he is not a fan of happy endings and so a number of key characters in the upcoming books are going to meet their end. Hence, it is expected that the last book of the series "A Dream of Spring" will also have a sad ending, according to Independent.
