Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook star in the fantasy drama 'Goblin.'

The tvN series "Goblin" became one the popular South Korean dramas with its unique storyline, star-studded cast and the adorable bromance between lead actors Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook. However, Lee almost did not make it to the drama's final casting list given writer Kim Eun Sook's initial apprehensions that he may not fit the grim reaper role.

"Goblin" writer Kim previously revealed that she had to work hard to convince Gong to star in her drama projects. The "Coffee Prince" actor has been rejecting Kim's various offers for the past five years before accepting the titular role in the tvN fantasy series.

It appears that Lee has had to exert the same effort in order to land the role of the grim reaper. The "My Girl" star was rejected several times by Kim over claims that he may not be able to effectively portray the angel of death, according to Daily Economy, as cited by All Kpop.

After reading the script for "Goblin," Lee became enamored with the grim reaper character and even expressed his willingness to play a secondary role. Despite the actor's efforts and his agency's attempts to convince Kim to give Lee a chance, the "Descendants of the Sun" co-writer was adamant about her initial decision.

However, a meeting arranged by Lee's agency between the actor and Kim helped to pave the way for his inclusion to the tvN drama. The "Wild Romance" star managed to persuade the "Goblin" writer when he showed his avid interest in the said role.

Following Lee's confirmed casting alongside Gong, the actor has been hard at work preparing himself for his various roles in "Goblin." A representative for the tvN drama shared with XSports News that Lee has been diligently studying how to portray his two characters, namely as a grim reaper and a king.

"Goblin" airs every Friday and Saturday on tvN. Watch one of the iconic and funny moments between the grim reaper and the goblin in the clip below:
