"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 just confirmed the return of Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert. However, it seems that the character will not literally wake up from the dead to reunite with her best friends in Mystic Falls.
During a recent interview The CW, executive producer Julie Plec explained one of the most controversial scenes from the previous episode. At that time, Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) finally told Damon (Ian Somerhalder) her real purpose for tormenting him.
According to Sybil, she does not want Damon to forget about his humanity. Instead, she wants him to remember it fully so that he will remember what it was like killing and hurting other people.
Damon's memories go way back to the time when he first arrived in Mystic Falls until the last time he killed someone. This could mean that Damon will just remember the moments he shared with Elena, and this is how the character will return.
During an interview with Variety, Somerhalder said that as much as he wants to see Dobrev back on the hit The CW series, he does not think Damon deserves a happy ending after everything that he has done. Somerhalder's statement suggests that Elena may return, but will not necessarily end up with Damon.
Meanwhile, Damon turned catatonic in Friday night's episode, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Caroline (Candice Accola-King) are so concerned that he is not stronger than all of his thoughts.
Bonnie and Caroline have decided to enter Damon's brain to find out what is that one painful memory he could not get away from. By the looks of it, the memory has something to do with Elena's demise. And when Bonnie and Caroline enter Damon's head, they will also have the chance to reunite with their best friend.
In other news, Dobrev is expected to make an appearance in the final episode of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. However, if her return will not happen inside Damon's mind, it is possible that she will really be resurrected from the dead.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
