China Looks into 5G’s Technological Offerings

Huawei is one of the first firms to invest in the research and development of 5G technology.

China has recently engaged itself in several research as well as market studies about the 5G technology that can be applied in various fields such as driverless automobiles, the vice minister of industry and information technology recently revealed.

News platform Chinanews.com cited Huai Jinpeng's statement that among other several sectors to be benefited by the next-generation mobile telecom networks include navigation, newscasting and manufacturing.

Prior to Huai's announcement, China's minister of industry and information technology, Miao Wei, said that his office will be selecting six sectors to which the innovative 5G technology will be utilized. The minister furthermore enthused that intelligent vehicles will be the main products where 5G is set to be employed.

Ma Jihua, a Beijing Daojing Consultant Co. telecom analyst, told the Global Times on Sunday that "compared with the current 4G network, the biggest improvement of 5G technology is a faster data transmission speed."

Reports have been floating that 5G network is a hundred times faster than 4G.

In a Global Times article, China Mobile Internet Industry Alliance's secretary-general, Li Yi, said that "it is an appropriate time to boost 5G development as the upgrading of technology has further accelerated in recent years and Chinese firms should get ready for it."

Recently, tech giants such as Huawei and ZTE are showing interests in the technological offerings of 5G. In a March 3 Xinhua report, Huawei said that it is eyeing to invest $600 million in 5G technology research and development for the next three years.

Meanwhile, Shanghai automaker SAIC Motor Corp. earlier stated that it will partner with e-commerce giant Alibaba Group to develop an Internet car.

Such investments in the 5G technology signify that more products employing the technology will be launched this year.

With China's huge interest in 5G research and development, the government is looking forward to the country's foreseen big role in the global market in terms of promoting the said technology.
