‘Insidious’ Franchise Rises As America’s Top Horror Film

Leigh Whannell's "Insidious: Chapter 3" is currently showing in theaters helping the "Insidious" franchise to rise from being an underdog emerge to emerging as one of America's top movies of the horror genre .

"Insidious" surprised the market as it has made tons of profit, even if it was produced on a low budget, as per Vox.

First released on April 1, 2011, James Wan's horror film got an estimated gross of $13 million on its opening weekend, placing it at the third box office spot along with Tim Hill's comedy "Hop" and Duncan Jones' sci-fi "Source Code." Now, the film has got an estimated worldwide gross of $97 million.

Wan followed the horror film with a sequel, "Insidious 2," which was released on Sept. 13, 2013. "Insidious 2" managed to triple the opening weekend earnings of its predecessor, as it got an estimated gross of $40 million on its opening weekend. Its estimated worldwide gross also boomed at $161 million.

Having premiered on June 5,  "Insidious: Chapter 3" serves as the third film of the "Insidious" franchise. In fact, the film is a prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family in the original "Insidious" film. Leigh Whannell directed the film as Wan needs to direct the action film "Fast and Furious 7," which was also a success after its recent release on Apr. 3.

The three films of the "Insidious" franchise focused on creating a creepy atmosphere, instead of featuring bloody encounters. In fact, all three films had family as one of its films. The Lambert family in "Insidious" and "Insidious: Chapter 2."

Whannel's "Insidious: Chapter 3" is an enhancement of the second chapter of the franchise, as per The Guardian. It efficiently established jumps and scares to the fans with Elise Rainier as one of its central characters. Rainier helps Quinn Brenner and her family from the hands of a powerful dark entity, along with the help of ghost specialists Tucker and Specs.

"Insidious: Chapter 3" stars Tom Fitzpatrick as the Bride in Black, Whannell as Specs, Angus Sampson as Tucker, Tate Berney as Alex Brenner, Stefanie Scott as Quinn Brenner, and Lin Shaye as Elise. The film has made an estimated worldwide gross of $37 million on its first week.
