The Google Nexus 6 was manufactured by Motorola, a role previously held by LG. Many were surprised after Google made the decision to shift manufacturer, especially when LG manufactured the last two models of Google's flagship smartphone, Nexus 5 and Nexus 4.
The Motorola Nexus 6 was released in October 2014 while the LG Nexus 5 was released in October 2013. Google, along with Motorola and LG, has already released the official specs list of the two smartphones.
Compared to the LG Nexus 5, the Motorola Nexus 6 has a bigger 5.96-inch AMOLED display. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and has a display resolution of 1440 x 2569 pixel. On the display aspect, Motorola's Nexus model has made a significant improvement compared to the one made by LG.
The Motorola Nexus 6 has a new and upgraded chipset which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805. The chipset includes a Krait 450 quad-core 2.7 GHz processor and an Adreno 420 graphics processing unit. On this aspect, Motorola once again made noteworthy improvement. The LG Nexus 5 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with a Krait 400 quad-core 2.3 GHz processor and an Adreno 330 GPU.
On the operating system aspect, both the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 run on the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS with support for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Google has yet to comment whether the smartphones will support Android M once the new operating system is rolled out.
On the memory side, both Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 do not have a memory card slot which means that storage expansion will be limited to the internal storage. The Nexus 5 has a 16GB and 32GB variant with 2GB of RAM. The Nexus 6 has a 32GB and 64GB model with 3GB of internal memory.
The Nexus 6 will have an upgraded 13megapixel rear camera, an upgrade from the 8megapixel camera installed in the Nexus 5. The front camera of the Nexus 6 was upgraded to 2 megapixel from the 1.3 megapixel present on the Nexus 5.
According to GSM Arena, the Motorola Nexus 6 will have an upgraded 3220 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery. An upgrade that will give the new smartphone at least 30 hours of stand-by time compared to the Nexus 5.
According to Phone Arena, Google has slashed down the price of the Nexus 5 putting the 32GB model price at $4275 and the 64GB model at $591.
