With the start of summer in the northern hemisphere, mobile phones risk overheating which could permanently damage the gadget's lithium-ion batteries over time. To solve this problem, Chevrolet will include as added features of its 2016 Malibu and Impala models wireless charging bins for cellphones that doubles as aircon for the device.
According to the automobile manufacturer, the new Active Phone Cooling feature has a vent that is connected to the vehicle's air conditioning and ventilation system. The link provides cool air to the wireless charging bin where the mobile phone is placed. The connection is automatic; as soon as the aircon is switched open, the phone and the driver and passengers are also cooled, reports PCMag.
Explaining the product, Impala engineer Dan Lascu said in a statement, "Innovation doesn't mean reinventing the wheel. Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem."
Chevy said on Thursday that it would be the first carmaker to offer the phone aircon-cum-charging system. The invention was the result of Chevy testing its models in extreme heat when the firm's engineers observed that some of their smartphones stopped charging or shut off on its own when the device was kept inside a very hot car for just a few minutes.
The feature certainly would be appreciated by those who travel by road and could afford a Chevy. However, for people on the go often who use other modes of transportation such as planes, ships and trains or public buses, a wireless charging bin that cools the smartphone is but a pipe dream.
Venture Beat suggest that instead of charging mobile phones in public places such as bathrooms, gas stations, retail store outlets and restaurants - which run the risk of theft and water damage - the website recommends bringing extra charged batteries. However, the batteries should be stored in such a way as to prevent shortage. Another tip is to bring portable charging devices.
