One of the most anticipated contestants of "America's Next Top Model" cycle 22 is Nyle DiMarco. The "Switched At Birth" actor is the first deaf model to compete in The CW modelling competition created by former supermodel Tyra Banks.
In an interview with Washingtonian, DiMarco revealed that "ANTM" was not something that he had ever really thought about doing before and the show found him through his social media accounts and models.com, which is where he showcases his work.
"I love working with photographers," DiMarco said during the interview. "I love it when I surprise photographers that, despite the fact that I am deaf, I am capable of meeting their vision. I love it that I can read their body language and know what they do not like and what they do like."
DiMarco said he did not hesitate when he spoke with casting. Although he did not participate in the "ANTM" cycle 22 castings, he sent an audition video as part of the audition process.
For DiMarco, the most fun part of modelling is being able to deliver what the photographers require with his increased sense of sight from his being deaf. What he is most excited about joining "ANTM" cycle 22 is being able to educate the world about what deaf people can do.
Excited about being the first deaf model on "ANTM" and "shattering people's thoughts," DiMarco said people are already commenting on "ANTM" photos and direct messaging him on all social media platforms, even ignorantly asking him how it is possible that he can model.
Such questions shock DiMarco because, as he said, the fact that he cannot hear has no impact on his ability to be a great model. In fact, since American Sign Language requires facial and body expressions, he would be able to "bring energy and story" out of a photo, as he said in another interview with Frederick News Post.
"ANTM" cycle 22 is set to premiere on The CW on Aug. 5, Wednesday.
