"Mistresses" season 3 ended on a cliffhanger, which caused many fans to speculate that the ABC series would be renewed for a fourth season. The producers, however, admitted that they have yet to hear from the network about the renewal.

Speaking to TV Line showrunners Rina Mimoun and K.J. Steinberg shared that they thought about having an alternate ending to the season 3 finale. It was said that they had second thoughts about ending it with Calista (Jennifer Esposito) held at gunpoint by Wilson (Jarod Joseph).

They, however, soon realized that even if it ended with her getting the 911 call or Harry (Brett Tucker) tracking Calista it would not be as satisfying.

"We decided to just commit to our style of storytelling and cliffhangering and hope for a Season 4," Steinberg said.

The showrunners, however, explained that if they knew that "Mistresses" would be cancelled after season 3, the ending will definitely be different. Mimoun added that they are not the type of producers who wanted to keep the fans guessing in the end.  She said that they wanted to give fans a gratifying finale.

The show was recently named as the no. 2 scripted drama, after "Under the Dome" among adults 18-49, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, it has also been hinted that Esposito will no longer be returning even if the show gets renewed. Mimoun explained that the actress' character Calista is only meant to be with them for a single season.

She added that even if the Esposito gave a stellar performance, they wanted to introduce a new cast member to the foursome.
