"Under the Dome" has been officially cancelled after season 3. The CBS series will air its finale episode, titled "The Enemy Within" on September 10.
Speaking to Yahoo! News, CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said that the series became an instant hit when it premiered two years ago. She added that they are looking forward to present the final chapter of the Stephen King adaptation.
It was said that the series finale will focus on the Resistance's final attempt to stand against Kinship and its new queen.
Speaking to Buddy TV, executive producer Tim Schlattmann promised that the series finale will answer all the questions regarding the dome, its origin, secrets and purpose. Schlattmann held that fans will be given a satisfying ending to the series.
"I usually don't use this language ... but things are gonna get bananas," he said.
Schlattmann also hinted that a major character may die in the coming episode. He explained that unlike other series who just kill off characters without purpose, this death is necessary for the show.
Although the reason for the cancellation was not revealed many speculated that it was because of the show's low ratings.
When "Under the Dome" premiered in 2013, it was able to immediately capture the attention of the viewers. It was able to draw in an average of 13.5 million viewers during its debut. Unfortunately, the plot was reportedly not exciting enough to sustain the hype. The most recent episode was only able to get 4.6 million viewers to the disappointment of both cast and producers.
The final episode of "Under the Dome" season 3 airs September 10.
