'Extant' Season 3 Cancelled Or Renewed? CBS Hesitant To Renew 'Expensive' Series Due To Poor Ratings

Halle Berry and French actor Olivier Martinez were spotted together inside a car.

"Extant" fans are still eagerly waiting for the season 3 renewal announcement. Since season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, many assumed that this could only mean that CBS has already green lighted the third season. Turns out, however, there is still a strong possibility that the show could be cancelled.

According to Crossmap, having A-list cast members is not always a good thing. It was said that Halle Berry and Jeffrey Dean Morgan both demanded high salaries, which is only expected given their Hollywood status. The actors, however, failed to pull the numbers in to the surprise of the producers.

As reported by Carter Matt, the finale episode drew in 4.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, even lower than just the recently cancelled "Under the Dome." It may have developed a following when it first premiered but the numbers are clearly dwindling. If the ratings will be the only indication of the series' future then "Extant" fans may be in for a disappointment.

The publication held that they were not at all optimistic with the show's renewal. Even with its lucrative streaming deal, the show was reportedly too expensive to produce and CBS may just have to let it go.

Some TV critics, however, remained positive that CBS may be willing to give the series another chance. It may not be evident in the ratings but season 2 reportedly delivered a much better storyline compared to season 1. They also pointed out that having Steven Spielberg as an executive producer is bound to pay off sooner or later.
