Netflix announced that it is planning to release a programmable device called The Switch.

Tech analysts are calling this new device The Netflix and Chill Button. The device cannot be purchased online, instead Netflix will provide instructions on how to create it. This makes the device more of a DIY project.

Building The Switch requires basic programming knowledge. To help newcomers build their first device, Netflix created a specific build. Netflix's Switch features a single button built on top of a box. It is connected to a Particle Core microcontroller which is a basic computer, according to Gizmondo. It is has a lithium-ion polymer battery that connects via the microUSB port. It was also connected to a smart TV with a built-in Netflix app.

The Particle Core microcontroller is an Arduino-compatible development kit which has a built-it Wi-Fi adapter. It also has several LED's and an IR transmitter capable of mimicking IR signal's from Netflix compatible TVs.

The Switch can be programed to dim the lights, open Netflix, turn on the TV and even automatically order food. According to Engadget, creating and programming The Switch will required understanding of how web servers and APIs work and as well as basic knowledge of electronics. Some feature may also require additional hardware or program to work. For The Switch to be able to turn on the lights, user must have a smart light system installed in their house.

Netflix is also encouraging enthusiasts and hobbyists to submit their own proposal of the next Switch build. Interested contributors can head over to the Netflix Make It website to share their suggestions.
