"Castle" season 8 lead star Nathan Fillion recently weighed in on his character Rick Castle and Kate Beckett's (Stana Katic) breakup.

In an interview with TV Line, the actor also defended the show's co-showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley for splitting Rick and Kate up.

During the interview, Fillion said that he believes the temporary breakup is necessary not only for Rick and Kate's storyline, but also for the characters' growth.

He added that the co-showrunners made the bold move because they want fans to star rooting for the onscreen couple like they did during the first few seasons.

Meanwhile, Fillion also talked about some of the other changes that have become evident on the show this season.

Fans couldn't help but notice how Monday night's episode appeared to be comedic.

According to the actor this was done so that fans will be reminded that "Castle" isn't just a drama show.

"One of the things that Terence and Alexi are really big on, and I agree, is they don't consider 'Castle' to be a drama. It's never been much of a drama; it's far more a comedy with dramatic and heartfelt moments. And they wanted to bring far more a comedy with dramatic and heartfelt moments," he explained.

The co-showrunners previously spoke with TV Line during a different interview, and revealed that the upcoming episodes of "Castle" will enjoyable for fans to watch.

"Episodes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are a lot of fun. We're doing the standalone cases, we are keeping continuity with Becket's journey," Hawley said.

"Castle" season 8 airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
