PepsiCo To Buy Bottlers, After First Offer Months Ago Declined

If Apple's updated iPhone versions has the S and S Plus added to the gadget name, would the upcoming Pepsi smartphone have a diet version too?

On Monday, Reuters reported that Pepsi will foray from beverage production to selling devices. But the Pepsi phone, to be called P1, would be sold in China only, a spokeswoman of the company said.

Pepsi would launch the gadget on Oct. 20, to be priced the equivalent of $205. Specs include a 5.5-inch, 1080p screen, 1.7GHz CPU, 2GB RM, 16GB storage and 13-megapixel back camera and 5-megapixel front shooter. The phone would be powered by Android 5.1 OS, which is Lollipop, according to CNET.

The phone will have a variant, the transparent Crystal P1.

According to Mobipicker, which first reported the upcoming device, Pepsi would release more information on Oct. 20.

Pepsi says that it is not making the phone itself but only licensing its production, similar to other licensed Pepsi products such as clothes and accessories. The company spokeswoman notes that Pepsi has a number of licensees that make Pepsi-branded Danish luxury stereos, Bang & Olufsen TVs and Del Toro shoes. The Italian sports footwear is part of Pepsi's soccer campaign.

Mobipicker also raised the question if rival Coca-Cola would follow Pepsi's lead and follow suit given the intense competition between the two soda giants. Significantly, sales of soda drinks has dropped over the past few years because of health campaigns that blamed sugar-laden soft drinks for the growing obesity trend, especially in developed nations.
